Whole Foods Coming To JAX Beach – in 2021 – Really!

Roger Bull of The Florida Times-Union reports that Whole Foods confirmed it is coming to JAX Beach in an Equity One-owned center on Third Street where an Office Depot is now.  But they also confirmed it may not open until 2021.  Speculation is that once the Staples/Office Depot merger-acquisition is done, that Office Depot store could be on the chopping block, opening up the space for Whole Foods.  That is, if the merger is approved; Office Depot merged with OfficeMax in 2013 and the Staples transaction would leave just one office supply store.  But if you have been in any office supply store lately – you and a few others – maybe one chain is all we need…

Whole Foods has only one store in JAX, in Mandarin; the new JAX Beach store would be joining the only Trader Joes in the region which opened there in late 2014.  This announcement is not a surprise, given the popularity of organic and specialty grocers nationwide and in Northeast Florida, where we have seen new grocers in recent years such as The Fresh Market, Trader Joe’s, EarthFare, Aldi and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market.
